Innsbruck Airport to St Anton: getting to the Arlberg without a car
St Anton am Arlberg is one of the best-known ski resorts in Austria, and Innsbruck is the usual airport for it, even though it's not exactly next door — the resort is about 100 km west, and the drive takes an hour to an hour and a half depending on the weather, which in ski season is not a small caveat.
There's a genuinely good train option here. Innsbruck's main station is a short hop from the airport by bus or taxi — the airport itself has no rail link — and from there the Arlberg line runs direct to St Anton. It's scenic, reliable in most conditions, and a popular choice with skiers who don't want to drive in snow they're not used to.
The catch with the train is luggage, specifically ski and snowboard bags. Stations aren't always step-free, platforms can be tight, and hauling boot bags and skis through a connection at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof isn't anyone's favourite part of a ski trip.
A pre-booked transfer avoids all of that — door to door from the terminal, gear loaded once, no station to navigate. Given the distance and the fact winter road conditions can add real time to the drive, it's also one of the few routes on this site where I'd actively recommend booking ahead rather than deciding on arrival.
Rule of thumb: light luggage and happy with a connection, the train to St Anton is a solid, scenic option. Skis, snowboards or a group, book a transfer — the extra certainty matters more here than on a summer beach route, because winter weather doesn't care about your timetable.
