Malaga Airport to Marbella: why there's no train
I get asked about this route a lot, usually by someone who's looked at Malaga's train map and assumed it covers Marbella. It doesn't. The Cercanías line that runs along the coast from the airport stops at Fuengirola — a solid 25 km short of Marbella — and there's no rail link to close the gap.
That leaves road transport for the full journey, which is around 60 km and takes 45 minutes to an hour on the AP-7, more if you're unlucky with summer traffic along the Costa del Sol.
A direct coach does run from the airport to Marbella, and it's the cheapest way to cover the distance if you're not in a rush and don't mind the stops it makes along the way. It's a reasonable option travelling alone or as a couple with hand luggage.
Taxis wait outside both terminals and will do the trip without any changes, but on a 60 km fare the meter adds up, and taxi ranks at Malaga can get long during the Friday and Saturday turnover when half of Europe's flights seem to land at once.
Given the distance, this is a route where a pre-booked transfer earns its price rather than just buying convenience — you know the cost before you fly, and for three or four people splitting one car it often beats both the coach and the taxi on a per-person basis. Rule of thumb: solo and relaxed, take the coach. Group, late arrival, or heading somewhere other than central Marbella, price a transfer before you land.
