Shared shuttle vs private transfer: which is actually cheaper?
Shared shuttles look like the obvious budget choice, and a lot of the time they are. But the moment you're travelling as a group, the maths flips faster than people expect.
Shared shuttles charge per person — usually €25–€45 for a 60–90 minute transfer in Europe. Private transfers charge per vehicle, typically €90–€160 for the same trip. So the breakeven point sits somewhere between three and four passengers on most routes.
Take Geneva Airport to Chamonix as a worked example. A shared shuttle runs about €35 per person. A private car for up to four people lands around €140. Two passengers: shared wins clearly (€70 vs €140). Four passengers: it's a draw on price, but the private car wins on comfort, luggage space, and zero stops at other hotels along the way.
Luggage tips the scales too. Most shared shuttles cap you at one large bag plus one carry-on per person. Ski or snowboard bags often cost extra, and bulky equipment can push you toward a private vehicle even if the group is small.
Rule of thumb: solo or couple with light bags, take the shared shuttle. Three or more, or anyone with sports gear, run the numbers on a private — it's often the same money for a much better trip.
